The Skiers' Bench is a small stop at the former ski jumps, created by an association of local enthusiasts and mountain lovers. It is here that people who are close to skiing, the history of the local sport, and a friendly gathering in a beautiful mountain environment regularly meet.
Ski jumps at the Girls' Bridges
Ski jumping has always been a popular sport in Špindlerův Mlýn. The first ski jump was built by enthusiasts of this winter sport in 1905 on the meadow below the Esplanade Hotel, today's Sněžka Hotel.
In 1936, the remarkable "Masaryk Bridge" was built at Dívčí lávek according to the design of architect Jarolímek. In the 1930s, it was the largest bridge in the Czech Republic. In the first competitions, the Japanese athlete Iguro jumped 81 meters on it. The finish line over the Elbe River was interestingly solved on a wooden bridge. Unfortunately, it was gradually devastated in the 1950s.
As a post for all brave ski jumpers, he built
Ski jumps in skiareal Svaty Petr
Other bridges were built in Svatý Petr. The first one stood there in 1906, in 1940 it was enlarged and in 1954 the entire ski jumping area was created with four bridges P16, P28, P50 and P72, which you could see in the Czech comedy film from 1972 "Homolka a Tobolka" in the mountains . In the eighties the bridges were demolished and that ended the era of ski jumping in our city.
Skiers' bench
As a tribute to all the brave ski jumpers, the Špindlerův Můstku (Skiing Bench) was built in 2015 by the Špindlerův Můstku (Skiing Association) on the site of the original "Masaryk Bridge". It serves not only as a place to rest, but also as a place for occasional cultural events. If you sit on the bench, you will see the remains of this structure at the foot of the opposite slope.
