In the údolí Labská (Labská Valley), in the southern part of Špindlerův Mlýn above the Labská Dam , you will find an original wooden bell tower with a cast-iron cross , whose history dates back to the first half of the 19th century .
The bell tower was built in 1828 (some sources also mention the construction around 1832) thanks to the initiative of a local carpenter and residents who lived here at a time when the area was only slowly being settled. The original stone cross was soon replaced by a cast iron one , which became part of the bell tower and permanently connected the sacred symbol with the surrounding landscape.
The bell tower underwent a complete restoration in 2007 thanks to a collection (from local and German residents) who contributed to its reconstruction so that this historical monument would not disappear from the landscape and cultural heritage of the region. The ceremonial re-consecration took place on September 8, 2007.
In the vicinity of the bell tower you will find old oaks and ash trees , which give the place a unique atmosphere of peace. The place offers a nice stop during a walk or trip to the Labská dam or while wandering through the historical part of Špindlerův Mlýn.
Walking around the Elbe Dam
You can also walk or cycle to the bell tower around the Elbe Dam. The route leads up a pleasant climb with views of the landscape and is also suitable for recreational walkers or cyclists. You will be rewarded with a quiet place to stop and sit. You will return to the centre of Špindlerův Mlýn around the dam or along the marked green route.
